CHAPTER 30: RUSH

August

August ran out of his office so quickly and without an explanation, he was certain Beaux probably thought he was crazy, but the moment his mother’s voice filled his head that he needed to come home, that something was wrong with Mercy, he’d got up and exited as fast as possible, leaving his Beta standing there, calling his name.

“Sorry--it’s Mercy,” he said, using the mind-link, as he was almost home. “Catch me up later.” They’d been talking about the new patrol schedule Beaux wanted to put in place to make sure the Omegas were well rested and every patrol had a fair amount of warriors on it. August thought it was a great idea, but he wasn’t about to sit and listen to another word when something was wrong with Mercy.

His mom hadn’t said what it was, and she wasn’t responding to his mind-link messages. So… he’d have to find out for himself.

He ran through the front door and found Mercy lying on the couch with blood dripping from her ears--both of them this time. His mother had a tissue pressed to each of them. Mercy’s eyes were closed, but every half a second or so, her body twitched.

“What happened?” he asked, seeing a mess of chips and marshmallows on the floor and Diet Pepsi can that looked like it’d been squeezed by a vise.

“I don’t know!” Isabella said. “One minute, she was fine. We had lunch. She was watching TV. I’d gone into the kitchen. When I came back… I found her sitting here screaming the same thing over and over again.”

“What was she saying?” August asked, lowering himself to his knees next to his mom so that he was closer to Mercy’s head.

“Uh… I couldn’t really understand it,” Isabella said with a shrug. “It sounded like ‘door.’ I thought maybe someone had come to the door and it scared her, but there was no one there.”

“What was on the television?” August asked brushing Mercy’s hair back off of her forehead.

“Some cartoon,” Isabella said. “I turned it off, and that’s when she stopped screaming and fell over.

August turned and picked up the remote control off of the floor. He didn’t want Mercy to see or hear anything that would upset her again, so he turned the speakers off before he turned the TV back on.

It was a cartoon, that was true. But as soon as he saw what it was, he understood what had to have happened. August didn’t watch a lot of cartoons, but he knew what this one was called because he’d seen plenty of little girls in the pack wearing shirts with her picture or carrying dolls that looked the same as the girl on the screen. He turned the TV back off.

“What was it?” Isabella asked.

“Dora the Explorer,” he replied.

Isabella’s eyebrows knit together. “Why in the world would that--”

He got close to her ear and whispered, “Pandora.”

“Oh.” Isabella sank down further on her knees. “I didn’t even consider--”

“I know.” August shook his head. “It’s just a good thing you were here when it happened.
